Cross-Filtering on Randomly-Coloured Grids

A simple experiment wherein the first image below was used to generate filtering masks, but the colour data used to determine new pixel values was obtained from images similar to the second image below:
Results from changing the size of the grid squares, but keeping the filtering mask size fixed at 256 pixels are shown below. While not shown here, changing the mask size but keeping the size of the grid squares fixed results in essentially the same trends. I used the basic version of the cumulative range geodesic filter (described here) to produce the images.
